Serena Parry

Hi, my name is Serena Parry and I am excited to have the opportunity to share my unique journey that has lead me to be become a health practitioner trained by Deepak Chopra and together with my partner of 7 years, a successful business owner. Before I go on I wanted to share a story with you all…

In 1982 an innocent little girl filled with all the potential of every human being on the day of their birth was born in New South Wales Australia.

As a little girl she was told that her parents had divorced when she was three months old. She did not ever recall her father from her childhood or so she thought. The divorce story was a lie that took 3 decades to unravel. She had in fact lived with her abusive father until the age of five. She had blocked all memory of him.

You might be thinking that this girl was lucky to escape her horrendously violent father with her mother at age 5. This also isn’t the truth. Everyone in the world experiences the impact of lies.

Her relationship with her mother didn’t provide much comfort either because she was also an alcoholic and violent.

She can only assume her mother lied about her past as an attempt to protect her from the truth. The trouble is, you may be able to make a child forget a violent past, but to erase the damage is not so easy.

It’s no surprise that her father died when she was just 14 so the only father she knew was whatever story she was fed by her mother. With no family support, she learned very early in life to stand on her own two feet. She became the adult in the relationship as her mother’s health declined.

Throughout her early twenties, this little girl fought to overcome the mental scars left by her abusive alcoholic mother. Even as an young adult she was unable to get a restful night sleep because she learned that even the comfort of her own bed wasn’t a safe place.

Eventually, this little girl lost her mother as well, both parents dying as a result of substance abuse.

She then turned to drugs to escape from what was going on around her and even got involved with drug dealers. There were times when she wanted to end her life and other times where she was just lucky not to end up dead or in jail.

Her first serious relationship was with a man with two children. She was just 19 years old. She became an instant mother to a 2 and 4 year old and she helped him out of a messy divorce and bankruptcy.

She went on to build a software development business and in less than 5 years it was turning over a million dollars and she had clients all over the world.

This was her first taste of success as she achieved some world firsts as part of that business. The business was eventually sold for millions of dollars but there is another twist in the story!

Still a regular drug user, it was at this point this little girl realised she needed to do something and fast. She felt like she was at a crossroads and could go down the same road as her parents or make a different life for herself. She got off the drugs and alcohol.

In her early thirties she travelled to South Africa to meet her father’s family for the first time and this where she learned the truth about her childhood. The nightmares she had experienced as a young adult weren’t nightmares. They were memories.

Her deep connection with her cat as an adult made more sense when she learned that her father once bought her a kitten, only to come home drunk a few weeks later, drag her and her mother into the bathroom and shot the kitten point blank in the head in front of her.

Constant exposure to this kind of environment meant that the flight or fight syndrome our body uses to protect us became her normal state of being.

This would have been a horrific experience at any age but for a little girl so young it’s hard to comprehend the scars it would leave. Who can you trust to make you feel safe if your own father is the source of unspeakable violence.

As she worked and worked to heal these wounds it seemed like everything she tried was a bandaid solution. Things began to make more sense when she learned that her parents didn’t divorce at 3 months of age and there were other, more troubling events from her past contributing to her mental health.

Near misses with the Police and dodging accidents and serious situations were because she was an imposter in that life it was an existence never meant for her.

Living in a constant state of anxiety for a prolonged period of time soon led to many health challenges.

However, years of stress on her mind and body meant that she was in very bad shape and the road to getting her health back on track was going to be a long one.

A lover of nature, she began a quest to search for natural solutions to achieving peak health and wellness – both for the body and the mind. She spent tens of thousands on trying to find cures for her health issues only to realise she had the answers inside her all along.

She also turned to her love of animals and in particular her cat – she realised that she could find safe, unconditional love and trust in her cat Joy. All of us can find such joy and love in animals, they give us everything and don’t expect anything in return. The little girl realised that she would always have a deep connection with animals due to losing her cat at a young age to unspeakable violence. She knew that her cat was murdered and she knew that she was lucky that she was not murdered as a child herself – her cat had essentially saved her life.

Joy made her feel safe, loved and was a source of security at a time when she felt little of that.

For her it was also about identifying and working on eliminating subconscious blockages that had led her to where she was. She noticed a theme that had come up all her life! For years she felt like an ‘invisible person’, always hiding in the shadows of the people around her, ex-boyfriend, her partner and even her daughter. That is all in her past and today she can now acknowledge her strengths and is no longer ashamed of her past. She refused to let her past be the reason why she couldn’t live a life filled with happiness, fulfillment and love. Knowing deep within that her life was to bring about an incredible greater good kept her alive and her faith and strength in feeling she needed to achieve more. How she achieved this was through the daily practice of yoga and meditation..

Today, she has a successful business, is financially independent, and more importantly has her health and a loving partner of 7 years and a beautiful daughter named Tahlia who both also help in guiding her each day and showing her the meaning of unconditional love.

Ordinary or extraordinary? I am sharing this with you for a reason. The facts are ordinary, meaning everyone knows someone or has experienced the impact of substance abuse, mental health and preventable ill health in our world.

For example, one in almost eight Australians take their own lives every day and suicide is the leading cause of death for young females.

Of all of the long term chronic health conditions in Australia which do you think are the most prevalent? Heart disease? diabetes? Surprisingly not! Mental and behavioural conditions affect over 4.0 million people in Australia (17.5%) the next closest being Asthma!

This can happen to anyone, of the 14 million annual premature deaths worldwide the majority could be prevented by eliminating or reducing things like smoking and the harmful use of alcohol. Among people who died between 15 and 44 years of age, 69.8% of deaths were considered to be potentially avoidable!

Child abuse is a also increasing issue within our culture within Australia and also needs to be addressed as a serious problem – over 300,000 cases of child neglect or abuse are reported to the authorities every year in Australia.

The little girl in the story is the practitioner before you. I turned the tide. My success in business made me realise I had too much more to offer the world. There is a solution and in sharing my story with you today one by one we can have the resources needed to heal one life at a time. Every movement starts with an idea, leadership and the first few followers and that is what brings us together to collaborate.

What started as a fascination with health and wellness has literally saved my life. It led me to developing my system for overcoming adversity and achieving optimal mind, body and spirit wellness as they are both connected and as we can see a serious issue in our society today.

This was what led me to the Chopra Center, where I learned about integrating Ayurveda into my life and also became a Certified Instructor.

The Perfect Health Program which I now teach has been developed by Dr’s Deepak Chopra and David Simon represents integration between the principles of modern science and insights from the world’s timeless wisdom traditions.

I now hold the distinction of being the only qualified Ayurvedic teacher currently practicing in Australia, who has been trained by Deepak Chopra.

More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life,Veda = science or knowledge). It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behaviour and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds you that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

So, how do I help others?

Over my 34 years I have become an “expert” at survival and overcoming adversity. I feel like I have learned have the tools and skills and help others in how to overcome adversity, live to their potential but more importantly come out the other side the best version of themselves. Going through perceived challenges needs to be seen as an opportunity to stretch ourselves yourself and grow and through those experiences. You we become who we you remember who you really are and are meant to be and really see what you are capable of.

What really sets me apart is the ability to My passion combines my skills as a successful business owner with what I now know about health and wellness. I now take this quantum as I not only help individuals live healthy lives and live to in their potential but and also assist health and wellness businesses to grow massively and to their maximum potential.

I use the truth as a force for good.

Always remember that you are capable of amazing things.
